Who I am
I’m a Calgary-based Data & Storytelling Strategist with more than two decades of experience working at the intersection of data analysis, journalism, and public communication.
In practical terms, that means I help people and organizations make sense of complex information and communicate it clearly to the audiences that matter.
From journalism to strategy
For 20 years, I worked as a journalist, including more than a decade with CBC News. As a senior reporter and data journalist, I specialized in stories rooted in evidence: stories that required digging into raw datasets, understanding policy and technical systems, and translating that complexity into clear, accurate, and engaging narratives for a general audience.
Over the years, my work covered a wide range of subjects from economics and public policy to health, climate, energy, demographics, and social trends.
What tied that work together was my approach: asking the right questions, critically interrogating the data, putting it in context and explaining what it all means in simple terms — but without oversimplifying.
My work was widely read, frequently cited, and recognized with numerous journalism awards. But more importantly, it shaped how I think about information, credibility, and effective communication.
Why this work matters now
Today, data is everywhere. Organizations have access to more information than ever before, but making sense of it, and using it effectively, remains a challenge.
Some organizations struggle to extract insight from the data they already have. Others understand their work deeply, but find it difficult to explain that work to non-experts, decision-makers, or the public.
That’s where I come in.
My work with data — including analysis, visualization, and automation — allows me to connect raw numbers and real-world meaning. And my experience in public communication helps ensure that important insights don’t just gather dust in a report, but make it out into the minds of many.
How I work
Because my work spans data analysis, storytelling, and communications, I’m often most useful at the seams, where disciplines overlap and things get messy. I’m comfortable working independently or collaboratively, contributing directly or acting as a strategic sounding board.
I’ve also designed curriculums and taught courses in data and journalism at Mount Royal University, and I’ve regularly worked alongside academics, policy experts, and communications professionals. That experience has reinforced the value of collaboration and two-way information sharing. I’m always happy to learn from others and to share my knowledge.
Partnerships
I work in partnership with two organizations run by people I know and deeply respect — and who, like me, come from journalism backgrounds.
Through Probe Research, I collaborate on polling, qualitative research, and strategic studies that help clients understand public opinion, stakeholder perspectives, and social dynamics.
Through Champion Communications, I collaborate on strategic communications, media relations, and public-facing storytelling for organizations doing important work across Canada.
Together, these partnerships allow me to offer clients a suite of flexible, tailored services, including analysis, research, communication, or an integrated approach that brings all of those elements together.
Let’s talk
If anything of this sounds like it might be of use to you and your work, I’d be happy to talk about the possibilities.
Sometimes that might start with a well defined project. Other times, it might start with just an idea.
Either way, I’m interested in a conversation.
